Preparing for Confirmation

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control"
                                                                                       Galatians 5:22-23

Who may be Confirmed?

In the Archdiocese of Seattle, the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred on baptized Catholics aged 16 or older. Catholics who wish to be Confirmed are expected to participate in Mass regularly and complete the appropriate preparation program.

Additionally, candidates need to be registered and active parishioners, who have already celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and Eucharist prior to preparation for Confirmation. (Persons still needing those sacraments are directed to participate in the RCIA.)

We are privileged to have the Bishop celebrate Confirmation with us once each year. Because of the large number of confirmandi, the preparation classes and the Confirmation Mass are held at Holy Disciples.

The Church requires a sponsor for a Confirmation candidate to be a practicing and Confirmed Catholic who is at least 16 years of age. Sponsors from another Catholic parish are asked to have their parish verify this information for us.

Confirmation of Youth

Confirmation preparation for those 16-18 years old is parish based and customarily offered each year. Since preparation for youth includes participation in our Senior High Youth Group and regular Mass attendance for at least one year prior to enrolment in the Confirmation Classes, it could be said that our program is a two-year process.

The first of these two years consists in regular participation at Mass and in the parish Youth Group Program on Sunday evenings. The second year adds an additional Sunday class (about two per month) to this regular participation in the parish Youth Group (either here at Our Lady of Good Counsel or at Holy Disciples).  A weekend Confirmation Retreat during this second year is also a required part of the program.

Confirmation of Adults

Baptized Catholic adults who wish to be Confirmed prepare for the sacrament through the parish program. Adult preparation is separate from the youth program. Candidates for Confirmation need to be registered and active parishioners.
